Athens 200 years 200 buildings – ISBN: 978-618-85306-1-4
grad review announces the release, in May 2021, of the album book
edited by architect Manolis Anastasakis.
The 330-page album book features 200 selected buildings of Athens,
from 1821 to 2021. The presentation of each building is one-page long
and includes a photograph, essential information and a brief description
of the building.
The volume celebrates the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution of 1821
and it aims to showcase the richy varied buildings of the capital city
of the Modern Greek state. The 200 buildings we, all of which are still standing,
were selected for their architectural value.
The book is organized chronologically so that the reader can locate each building
in its historical context. Beginning with the first period of Athenian Classicism,
the presentation continues with examples of Late Classicism and on the early
20th century. In the Interwar period the modern movement began to take over
architecture. Two post-war periods follow, the second one lasting to this day.
The album book includes an introduction by Manolis Anastasakis
(editor and director of grad review), as well as eight essays by distinguished
professors and researchers, who discuss the whole period covered by this volume:
by Yannis A. Aesopos
(Professor and Chair of the Department of Architecture, University of Patras),
by Manos Biris
(Emeritus Professor of the School of Architecture of NTUA),
by Marilena Z. Cassimatis
(Art Historian),
by Maria Daniil
(Dr in Architecture from the NTUA),
by Helen Fessas-Emmanouil
(Historian of Architecture and Professor Emeritus of the University of Athens),
by Stylianos Giamarelos
(The Bartlett School of Architecture UCL, Executive Editor The Journal of Architecture),
by François Loyer
(Art and Architecture Historian, Honorary Director of Research at the CNRS),
by Kostas Tsiambaos
(Assistant Professor NTUA School of Architecture).
Most of the photographs of the buildings were taken by photographer Vassilis Makris.
The publication of the book was made possible by the exclusive sponsorship of AVAX Group.
The book is available in Greek and in English in separate editions.
